2017-2018 AMS Freshman Scholarship Winners Reflect on Their First Year

2017-2018 AMS Freshman Scholarship Winners Reflect on Their First Year

In academic year 2017-2018, the School of Meteorology was privileged to have four of the AMS (American Meteorological Society) Freshman Scholarship winners commit to OU for their Bachelor’s degrees. Over the next few weeks, we will be featuring each of these students; learning about them and their experience during their first year as OU Meteorology students.

Our second student is Andrea Gordon. Andrea is from Rosemount, Minnesota and is double majoring in Meteorology and Flute Performance. Outside of academics, She is in the Pride of Oklahoma, Wind Symphony Band, and Tau Beta Sigma.

This summer Andrea is working with Professor Dr. Cameron Homeyer and the Convection, Climate, and Chemistry Research Group. (CCC Group Website)

Andrea chose the University of Oklahoma due to its people and the unique facilities.

“I really liked the meteorology program where the faculty and staff were very welcoming and having classes at the National Weather Center was also a major bonus. The campus was also super pretty, and I liked the size of OU where it is large enough but not too big. All the faculty and researchers are very approachable and always excited to meet and get to know the meteorology students.”

For Andrea, the transition from high school to college was about what she expected.

“In college, you have more freedom but are a lot more responsible for yourself than you were in high school, your success is determined by the amount of effort and studying put into each class.”

Being in the School of Meteorology offers many unique opportunities to get involved, and Andrea didn’t have a hard time finding a place to fit in.

“There are so many different student organizations to be involved with, there is something that fits everyone. Some of the organizations I am involved with are OWL, SCAN, the weather friends, and Meteorology Student Ambassadors.  All of these organizations also allow the meteorology students to become close with their peers, so they are like a second family, even during freshman year.”

We are so glad Andrea chose the School of Meteorology at OU and we wish her the best over the next few years in the program!
