AMS Freshman Scholarship Winner 2018 – Hannah Gard

In academic year 2018-2019, the School of Meteorology was privileged to have Hannah Gard, one of the freshmen honored by the AMS (American Meteorological Society) commit to OU. After being recognized by AMS as an outstanding student, Hannah reflects on her first year at OU.
From the beginning, as a Colorado native, OU was not a major consideration for Gard:
“I was not going to consider it because I had never been to Oklahoma and being from Colorado I just assumed it was flat and I didn’t really like that but I was going to drive down to visit Texas A&M because my mom went there and she said, ‘we should stop by OU on the way’. Then after seeing how beautiful the campus is and how amazing the NWC is I was sold.”
The transition from high school to college can be tough, especially when students come from out of state. Gard said she had a great freshmen year and depended on her good work ethic to make it through difficult course work.
Outside of schoolwork though, Gard has many hobbies to occupy her time.
“I enjoy singing and playing instruments. I play guitar and piano and sing. I also love hiking and skiing and walking my dog. The outdoors are my passion so being outside in Colorado is one of my favorite things.”
Gard is an active member of OU’s student-run newscast, OU Nightly. She worked this past year as part of the digital content team and a weather assistant.
“I’m looking forward to the many opportunities the school has for broadcast meteorology and just learning as much as I possibly can. I love learning and I can’t wait to learn about meteorology and life.”
Congratulations to Hannah on a successful first year, and we wish you the best of luck in all your endeavors in the future!
