Office Hours: Thursdays 4:30-5:30

I will hold my weekly office hours in the atrium of Sarkey’s Energy Center the hour before class starts. I also have an office in the National Weather Center (NWC 5110) where we can meet by appointment.

My job as your Laboratory Instructor is to help you understand the presented material. I don’t know what you don’t understand unless you tell me. Ask questions! I love answering questions. If your schedule conflicts with my office hours or would prefer to discuss something one on one, email me to set up a time we can meet.

Course Description

This lab will cover a wide range of topics about weather and climate and serves as a complement to the material covered in the METR 1014 lectures.

Course Goals

  • To gain an understanding of how material presented applies to the real
  • To gain hands-on experience using some of the methods and techniques used in weather and climate

Course Materials

Text: Essentials of Meteorology: An Invitation to the Atmosphere C. Donald Ahrens We will not use the textbook directly for the labs, but it is a valuable resource and you’re encouraged to bring it to class.

Weekly Labs: The labs will be posted weekly to the Canvas website. It is your responsibility to print them off and bring them to class.

Lab Supplies: pencil, colored pencils, and a calculator. You may NOT use your laptop or smartphone (or any other internet capable device) during lab.

Academic Integrity

Each student will do his or her own lab and turn in their own lab report. Discussion of lab concepts and collaboration with your classmates is encouraged, but you must turn in your own, original work. Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated in any form.

Labs are expected to be completed during the allotted class time. Do not work on the lab before class. This will be considered a form of cheating and will result in a score of zero for that lab.

Lab Structure

We will start each lab promptly at the scheduled time and you are expected to be on time. You are expected to come to each lab prepared, with a copy of the lab assignment and any other materials (pencils, colored pencils, etc) you may need. I will not have extra copies of the lab or extra supplies with me. I will not accept a loose leaf sheet of paper with the answers written on it. (There is a printer in the library in Sarkey’s Energy Center but it will likely charge a small fee.)

I will give a brief introduction to each lab before you start on your assignment. Labs are due at the end of each lab period. The 1 hr 50 min allotted to class is sufficient to complete each lab, but be sure to use your time wisely.


Attendance in lab is mandatory as lab assignments are completed during that time. If you are going to miss a lab for a university approved reason (i.e. athletics, religious reasons) inform me as soon as possible, but no later than two days before the class you’re going to miss. If you have to miss lab because of unforeseen circumstances, such as an illness or family emergency, still inform me as soon as you can but I understand that you might not be able to do so at least two days before the lab. In either case I will work with you to make up the missed work. (For example, you may, only with the TA’s prior approval, attend a different lab section that week or schedule a time to make up the work with me.)

Your final lab grade will account for 25% of your total grade in the course. The labs will be graded for the most part on accuracy. Your lowest lab grade will be dropped at the end of the semester. There will be a total of five quizzes over lab material. These will be announced in class the week before they are given.

A note on penmanship: I can’t grade what I can’t read. Ensure your work is neat and legible so as to not lose points.


If you send me an email, include “METR 1014” and your last name in the subject line. I receive a lot of emails and this will keep your from getting lost in the shuffle. You can expect a response from me within 24 hours.


I will use Canvas to post grades, lab notes, and other important information. You should check it regularly for announcements.
