The WSR-88D weather radar network in the US collects copious amounts of radar data every year, ranging from data on clear air echoes to winter storms and severe weather days. The GridRad-Severe database aims to centralize data collected on severe weather days and process it for both individual and large-scale statistical analyses. The goal is to use this decade-long database of radar data on severe weather days to further elucidate repeating patterns in radar data before and during the period that a storm produces severe weather. Herein, we will discuss the ongoing creation of the GridRad-Severe database, including how severe weather events are selected, how time frames and spatial bounds are determined, and what severe weather phenomena we focus on for a given day. A storm mode classification scheme is also discussed and applied to the growing database. All of these aspects of the database are shown through the lens of a single case study, a multi-threat event on April 14, 2011. Early statistical work using a limited selection of the GridRad-Severe database will also be shown.
