Assistant Professor of Meteorology

The Department of Earth Sciences at the University of South Alabama invites applications for a full-time (9-month), tenure-track Assistant Professor position in meteorology, starting August 15, 2022. A Ph.D. in meteorology or a closely related field is required at the time of appointment, but ABD candidates near completion of the degree will be considered. We seek a broadly trained meteorologist/atmospheric scientist to teach courses in Radar Meteorology, Severe Storms, Python programming, as well as other lower- and upper-level electives and required courses as needed. Depending on qualifications and interest, the candidate could also teach courses in the GIS program and at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab. Additional duties include academic advising of undergraduate students and possibly faculty advising of student activities such as the American Meteorological Society/National Weather Association student chapter. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated success in the classroom and potential to recruit undergraduate meteorology majors and contribute to the growth of the department, college, and university. The area of the candidate’s research expertise is open, but experience in machine learning or Artificial Intelligence applications would be advantageous.

The Department of Earth Sciences consists of 17 full-time faculty and staff members and approximately 150 undergraduate majors in the disciplines of Geology (B.S.), Geography (B.S.), and Meteorology (B.S.).
