Atmospheric Instrument Specialist

This technical specialist appointment in the Environmental Science Division of the Argonne National Laboratory will involve providing technical support for operating and maintain meteorological instruments and data collection systems including but not limited to:

  • Configuring, deploying, and maintaining meteorological instrumentation such as anemometers, radiometers, temperature/relative humidity probes, soil sensors, lidars, radar wind profilers, and Campbell Scientific data loggers.
  • Computer management, instrumentation and digital communications networking, and data acquisition/processing programming experience.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve instrument problems both remotely and while working in the field.
  • Data quality assurance of operational instrumentation.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • B.S. in physical sciences related to Atmospheric Sciences or similar desired.
  • Knowledge of Campbell Scientific data logger operation and programming is highly desired.
  • Previous experience deploying and troubleshooting instrumentation is desired.
  • Interest in learning theory and operations of instrument systems.
  • Data analysis experience is desired.
  • Programming skills with experience in Python, Fortran, C, and Unix/Linux not required but beneficial.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.

This position can be hired at one of two levels, the requirements for each are as follows:

  • PT2 Education and Experience Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree and 2+ years or experience or equivalent.
  • PT3 Education and Experience Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree and 4+ years or experience or equivalent.
