CIRES/NOAA PSL Boundary Layer Meteorologist Research Scientist

Job Summary

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) in Boulder, Colorado is seeking a research scientist to work in the NOAA Physical Sciences Laboratory (PSL) Boundary Layer Observations and Processes team. The Research Scientist will:
  • Collect and analyze atmospheric boundary layer observational data sets, as well as deploy and maintain instruments
  • Develop new methods for integrating multiple remote sensing and in-situ instrumentation systems to extract useful meteorological information
  • Use observations to improve our understanding of boundary layer dynamical processes
  • Use observations to evaluate numerical weather prediction models
A chosen candidate is expected to be self-motivated, initiating and pursuing fundamental research questions to expand our knowledge of the atmospheric boundary layer that are relevant to NOAA’s mission. The candidate should have excellent communication skills and be very comfortable working in a team environment.
These positions will be located in Boulder, Colorado, with an office at the NOAA Physical Sciences Laboratory (PSL).

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Conduct research relevant to NOAA and PSL’s missions involving boundary layer meteorology and its application to renewable energy, severe weather, hydrology, air quality, and weather forecasting.
  • Work collaboratively with a research team, including other NOAA laboratories and potentially operational partners in the National Weather Service.
  • Effectively convey the research results through reports, peer-reviewed journal articles, and presentations.
  • An opportunity exists to write proposals to partially fund the team’s research activities.


What You Should Know

  • If you are the selected finalist you will be required to pass a federal laboratory background clearance for site access.
  • This position will be rostered in CIRES at the University of Colorado Boulder but will be physically situated in the David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80305.

  • The annual hiring range for this Research Associate/ Research Scientist position is $65,000-$90,000, commensurate with education and experience. Salary will be determined based on CIRES’ internal career track classification.
  • Relocation funds are available for this position following CIRES’s and the University of Colorado’s relocation processes and procedures.

What We Require

  • Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience with ground-based meteorological remote sensing observing systems, and diagnosing observations to understand fundamental physical processes.
  • Experience developing structured code in commonly used languages, which might include Python, Matlab, IDL, R, Fortran90, C, and UNIX scripting.


What You Will Need

  • A proven record of publishing articles and presenting their research in conferences and seminars.
  • Excellent skills in writing and speaking English, and exceptional communication skills.
  • The ability to travel with roughly a frequency of 2-4 trips per year.


What We Would Like You To Have

  • Familiarity with passive remote sensing systems and physical retrievals, as well as boundary layer parameterization schemes within numerical weather prediction models would be useful.
