Naval Stem Internships
Each year the U.S. Navy offers summer internships through the Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP).
This paid ten-week internship is designed to provide opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to participate
in research, under the guidance of an appropriate mentor, at a participating Navy laboratory. The Office of Naval Research
(ONR) sponsors this program, administrated by the American Society for Engineering Education, and offers summer
appointments at a Navy lab to current sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students.
The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) is one of the many U.S. Navy laboratories and institutes participating in NREIP.
NRL operates as the U.S. Navy’s full-spectrum corporate laboratory, conducting a broadly based multidisciplinary program
of scientific research and advanced technological development directed toward maritime applications of new and improved
materials, techniques, equipment, systems and ocean, atmospheric, and space sciences and related technologies. The bulk
of NRL’s scientific divisions are headquartered in Washington, D.C., but there is several satellite offices focused on specific
subject matter. The offices in Monterey, CA are home to the NRL-MMD, where over 60 scientists work on a broad array of
atmospheric science topics including global and mesoscale numerical model development, data assimilation, probabilistic
prediction, aerosol, radiation, remote sensing and meteorological applications for the U.S. Navy.
We encourage the top students from our nation’s best meteorology and atmospheric science programs to apply for an NREIP
scholarship at NRL MMD. Students may opt to apply to work at any of the participating U.S. Navy laboratories, but meteorology
and atmospheric science students should select NRL-MMD among their top choices to ensure visibility to our scientist mentors
when reviewing applications. The website (www.nreip.asee.org) provides more detailed information about NREIP and how to apply.
The deadline to apply for the Summer 2018 NREIP internships is approaching fast (31 October 2017), so we encourage you to
spread the word to your students as soon as possible. Attached is a brochure that briefly describes NREIP and a second
program (SEAP) geared toward high school students.
