The Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research, Karlsruhe Institute
of Technology, Campus Alpin, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany is
looking for a PhD student to fill a three-year position. The position
will be embedded in the proposed DFG research unit FOR 2589 entitled
“Near-Realtime Quantitative Precipitation Estimation and Prediction
(RealPEP)” with cooperation partners from University of Bonn, Research center
Jülich, FU Berlin, and the German meteorological service (DWD).
The central goal of RealPEP is the improvement of flash floods
forecasts. This will be achieved by significant improvements at all
stages along the process chain, from Quantitative Precipitation
Estimation (QPE), Precipitation Nowcasting (QPN), numerical prediction
of quantitative precipitation (QPF) and predicting discharge and
potential flash floods in small- to meso-scale catchments (FFP). KIT
contributes to the improvements of QPE by using commercial microwave
links (CMLs) for rainfall observation and by combining CML and weather
radar data.

The main work tasks for the position are:
– Analyze long-term CML data records to develop automated
detection algorithms for anomalous behavior
– Derive rainfall information from CML data
– Fill gaps in radar observations with CML derived rainfall
– Use CML data to constrain radar data processing and improve QPE

To be successful the potential candidate should have:
– University degree in environmental- or natural sciences
(meteorology, hydrology, geography, physics, etc.)
– Good programming skills, preferably in Python
– Basic knowledge of, or willingness to learn, best-practices for
scientific programming (version control, reproducibility, open
sourcing code)
– Knowledge of UNIX/Linux systems
– Good communication skills in English
