Postdoctoral position in Urban Microclimate Modelling
The Chair of Hydrology and Water Resources Management, Institute of Environmental Engineering, at ETH Zurich has a vacancy at the Future Cities Laboratory (Singapore-ETH Centre) for one Postdoctoral position in Urban Microclimate Modelling
The project “Ecosystem services in the urban landscape” (ESS), aims at finding ways of incorporating knowledge about tropical urban ecosystem services into design, both at a local scale and across larger city landscapes. The project is modular and highly interdisciplinary with a combination of scientists with backgrounds in plant ecology, landscape ecology, hydrology and landscape architecture and from multiple countries. The ecohydrology module of the project aims to quantify the role of vegetation and architectural design in providing benefits at different spatial scales. In particular, it will focus on the role that vegetation plays in enhancing the thermal comfort including the reduction of air temperature and humidity as well as providing shading.
Most of the work will be conducted in Singapore, but the developed tools will be applicable over a much wider area of tropical South-East Asia.
The Singapore-ETH Centre is a multidisciplinary research centre located in Singapore, which was established by ETH Zurich in 2010. The centre forms part of the CREATE campus of the National Research Founda-tion of Singapore. Future Cities Laboratory (FCL) is one of two large research programmes run under the auspices of the Singapore-ETH Centre. The core of the FCL approach lies in integrating science, technology and design in order to better understand urban systems, provide tools to improve their construction and management, and shape the future of cities by providing design scenarios based upon the best technology and scientific understanding.
We are looking for a candidate with a PhD degree preferably in the field of Atmospheric Sciences, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Hydrometeorology, Hydrology, or a related discipline that includes specific and broad knowledge in the area of microclimate and hydrology with focus on surface energy budget and urban environments. Candidates with an interdisciplinary background are particularly welcome, but knowledge of numerical modelling tools is considered essential. The candidate will be responsible for completing the scientific tasks of the ecohydrology module within the “Ecosystem services in the urban landscape” (ESS) project as well as interfacing with other project partners.
Organisational and oral/written communication skills are therefore required. An excellent command of English is essential. Previous experience with similar research in urban environments and in urban-heat island issues rep-resents an additional asset. Knowledge and/or experience with large-eddy simulations (LES) is evaluated very positively. Quantitative and modelling skills, thereby including programming skills, are a prerequisite for the position. Theoretical and modelling work is expected to be the focus of the position. The successful candidate will be offered a Postdoc position for two years.
The contract conditions follow the Singapore-ETH Centre regulations.
