Rapid-Update Radar Observations of Downbursts

Rapid-update radar data from the National Weather Radar Testbed Phased Array Radar and radar data from KOUN are used to examine the evolution of downburst precursor signatures in two case studies. On 14 June 2011, a multicell thunderstorm produced three severe (winds greater than 25 m s-1) downbursts and two non-severe downbursts west of Norman, while on 10 July 2013, a multicell thunderstorm produced two severe and two non-severe downbursts near Edmond. For each case, three topics are discussed: (1) a comparison of the descending reflectivity cores, mean midlevel convergence, and ZDR troughs of severe and non-severe downbursts, (2) the evolutionary timescales of the precursor signatures, and (3) the potential predictive capabilities of each precursor signature. These topics are also discussed in terms of their potential benefits to operational meteorology.

You do not need a permit to park in one of 1,200 spaces reserved for CART bus riders, although you must ride the CART shuttle to park in the reserved area. This area is on the north central side of the Lloyd Noble Center. Elsewhere at the LNC, permits are required.
