Laboratory investigation of ice hydrometeor electrical discharge properties and settling velocities

Ice hydrometeors are an important component of both cloud and precipitation environments. Due to their wide-ranging and often complex geometries, accurately determining important properties and behaviors of ice hydrometeors can be a non-trivial matter. In-situ observations, remote sensing and modeling are often used, but may be inadequate in many cases. In such cases, the laboratory environment may provide a superior means for determining the property or behavior of interest. This talk will focus on two laboratory investigations – one involving the determination of the electrical discharge properties of precipitation-sized ice hydrometeors and the other involving the determination of the settling velocity of small (<100 micron) ice hydrometeors. The electrical discharge study was motivated by the need to understand the initiation of lightning in thunderstorms, while the settling velocity study was motivated by the need to accurately represent the effective lifetime of ice clouds in climate models.

You do not need a permit to park in one of 1,200 spaces reserved for CART bus riders, although you must ride the CART shuttle to park in the reserved area. This area is on the north central side of the Lloyd Noble Center. Elsewhere at the LNC, permits are required.
