Boundary Layer and Urban Scheme Performance for a nested 500m WRF simulation

The MYJ and YSU schemes are two of the most commonly used Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) schemes in the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. These parameterizations can optionally be combined with single- and multi-layered urban surface schemes that can interact with the PBL schemes. These urban schemes should provide a more realistic simulation of atmospheric conditions near and within an urban area. In this study, multiple combinations of PBL and urban schemes were used with WRF v3.6.1 to simulate the 10 May 2010 severe weather outbreak in central Oklahoma. The different combinations were evaluated against each other and observations to determine which performed best under control conditions (i.e. no urban surface) and with the presence of a large urban area (Dallas). It is found that YSU provides the most realistic representation of the boundary layer on this date. In addition, using the urban parameterizations was found to add no realism to the model’s representation of urban heat island characteristics.
