Department of Atmospheric & Environmental Sciences
SUNY Albany

Dr. Thorncroft received his Ph.D. from University of Reading, United Kingdom, in 1989. He is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences at the State University of New York at Albany. His research is mainly focused on improving our understanding of the West African monsoon and how it interacts with the tropical Atlantic. This includes work on the life cycle of African easterly waves and their interaction with convection and development into tropical cyclones. He also studies seasonal-to-decadal variability of the West African monsoon and its effects on atmospheric conditions in the tropical Atlantic region.
