National Weather Center Colloquium: Speaker Bio

Matrix Algebra of Convection’s Sounding Sensitivities and Adventures in Remote Data Integration

Dr. Brian Mapes
Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science
University of Miami

Dr. Mapes received his B.S. in Chemistry from Caltech (1985) and Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Washington (1992). In 1993-1995 he was a Postdoc at the University of Colorado and Colorado State University. From 1995 to 2004 he was a Research Scientist at the Climate Diagnostics Center and became faculty at the University of Miami in 2004.

His career began with studies of atmospheric convective clouds and storms, but then shifted to research on tropical weather and climate within a larger context that requires understanding of processes like radiation, surface interactions, mixing, and dynamics – the glue that connects all these parts. Working with postdocs, students, and collaborators, he maintains a three-pronged effort that builds from local scales, via quantitative analysis and abstraction, up toward global scales.
