National Weather Center Colloquium: Speaker Bio

Lightning physics and detection: cutting edge research at the University of Oklahoma

Dr. Danyal Petersen
Postdoctoral Scientists,
OU School of Meteorology

Dr. Petersen received his B.S. in Astrophysics and M.S. in Physics from the University of Oklahoma and his Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Nevada. His dissertation involved investigating the electrical discharge properties of vapor-grown ice crystals. He currently conducts observational research into the basic physics of lightning discharges and develops new techniques for monitoring electrical activity in thunderstorms. His other interests include enjoying life with his family, being excited during severe weather until it gets too close to his house, keeping up with college football, and developing his own metaphysical philosophy on the nature of life, the universe, and everything even though the answer, 42, is already known.
