Dynamics of the Madden-Julain oscillation

Dr. Adam Sobel
Columbia University

Dr. Sobel is Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory with a joint appointment in Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics at Columbia’s School of Engineering. He studies atmospheric and climate dynamics, with emphases on tropical phenomena, deep convection, and extreme weather. In recent years he received the Meisinger Award from the AMS (2010), AXA Award in Extreme Weather and Climate (2014), and Award for Excellence in Mentoring from Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (2010). He has become interested in communicating science to popular audiences (as well as continuing to write peer-reviewed articles). His book “Storm Surge" (Harper-Collins), about Superstorm Sandy, will appear in the fall of 2014.
