Making research more relevant: lessons learned from years of research-to-operations efforts at NSSL

Dr. Kain received a B.S. in Chemistry from the College of William and Mary in 1982. He worked for three years as an Analytical Chemist before entering the graduate program in Meteorology at the Pennsylvania State University, where he received an M.S. in 1989 and a Ph.D. in 1994. After a period of post-doctoral study at Penn State he accepted a position as a Research Meteorologist at OU/CIMMS in 1996. In this position he worked as a liaison between research scientists from the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) and forecasters/scientists from the NOAA Storm Prediction Center. He became a federal Research Meteorologist at NSSL in 2005 and became Chief of NSSL’s Forecast Research and Development Division in 2012.
