ABSTRACT: In 2016, NCEP selected the Finite Volume 3 (FV3) dynamical core to be the cornerstone of its NWP efforts in the years ahead. The first step towards a Unified Forecast System (UFS) is the implementation of the FV3GFS which will become the operational global model in early 2019. This presentation explains the need for the UFS, examines objective and subjective results from real-time and retrospective testing of the FV3GFS, and discusses modeling plans going forward.
