Postdoc position in EXCLAIM project – Atmospheric turbulence over complex topography

The Extreme-scale computing and data platform for cloud-resolving weather and climate modelling project EXCLAIM is an open ETH project that aims at developing infrastructure capable of deeply impacting our ability to model the regional to global ocean-sea-ice-atmosphere-land coupled system. The modelling platform is based on the ICOsahedral Nonhydrostatic Model (ICON) system that was developed primarily by the Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) and Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M). Within the scope of EXCLAIM, we are looking for a highly motivated scientist to complement the ongoing development by utilizing the model for sub-km scale modelling of atmospheric turbulence over the complex topography of the Alps.


Job description

The research focuses on the improved representation of atmospheric turbulence in numerical models to better understand the role of the complex topography on the regional-scale flow. The initial thrust will be on evaluating the performance of ICON over the complex topography of the Alps at increasingly high resolution. The first task in that direction would be to adapt the turbulence parameterization in ICON such that the transition from km- to sub-km grid resolution is smooth in terms of the modelled field. From there on, the scientist is expected to take a lead in shaping the research direction.

The scientist will have close interactions with the Climate and Water Cycle group members led by Christoph Schär and will benefit from their extensive modelling experience. Interaction with the modelling team at the German Weather Service (DWD) is also expected.

Your profile

  • PhD in atmospheric science, meteorology, physics, or a related field with good scientific computing experience
  • Experience in weather/climate modelling is not essential but good to have
  • Good understanding of turbulence modelling/parameterization
  • Experience in handling large codes (Fortran preferable)
  • The ability to work both in a team and independently.
  • Good English language skills
