OU Professor Wang leads successful collaboration intiative
Through a successful collaboration between the Multiscale data Assimilation and Predictability (MAP) research team led by Prof. Xuguang Wang at OU, and NOAA NWS NCEP, a new fully cycled hybrid ensemble-variational data assimilation system became operational starting the 2017 hurricane season for the US NWS HWRF modeling system. HWRF, a convection allowing regional modeling system, is an operational backbone for hurricane track and intensity forecasts by the National Hurricane Center. Prof. Xuguang Wang has been co-leading the data assimilation team of the NOAA Hurricane Forecast Improvement Program (HFIP) since 2012.
